Freelancers: managing money when income isn't regular

Freelance income can be excellent one month and thin the next. A few rules make it manageable.

1. Pay yourself a fixed 'salary'

Put all client payments into a business account. Transfer the same amount to your personal account each month, based on a conservative average.

2. Build a bigger buffer

Aim for an emergency fund of six months of expenses or more — irregular income needs a larger cushion.

3. Set money aside for obligations

Keep a share of each payment for annual costs, retirement savings and, where relevant, VAT and zakat.

4. Invoice and chase promptly

Send invoices on completion, with clear due dates. Late payers are your biggest cash risk.

5. Know your official status

Work through the appropriate route — such as a freelance document or a commercial registration — so you can invoice properly and access services.

6. Track your numbers

Monthly income, expenses and hours worked show which clients and services are worth your time.

If your income grows past the VAT threshold, registration becomes mandatory.
