Opening a second branch: a financial and regulatory checklist

Make sure the new location will pay for itself before you sign the lease.

Opening a second branch: a financial and regulatory checklist

A second branch can double your reach — or drain the profit of the first. Check these points before committing.

The numbers

  1. 1Break-even for the branch alone: its rent, staff and running costs versus realistic sales.
  2. 2Set-up cost and cash need until the branch breaks even, plus a buffer.
  3. 3Impact on the first branch: will it share customers, staff or management time?

The regulatory side

  • Under the new Commercial Register Law, one CR covers the whole Kingdom — update your CR data rather than opening a separate branch register.
  • Obtain the municipal licence for the new location and meet civil defence requirements.
  • Check whether your activity needs other licences at the new site.
  • Update your Nitaqat planning for the extra staff.

Systems

  • Track each branch as a separate cost centre so you can see its real profit.
  • Use the same point-of-sale and inventory system across branches.

Try the break-even calculator with the new branch's figures.
