Planning for retirement: start earlier than you think

Why the pension alone may not be enough, and how to build your own plan.

Planning for retirement: start earlier than you think

Retirement planning feels distant — until it isn't. Starting early makes the biggest difference.

Step 1: know your pension position

Check your registration and contribution history with GOSI and understand the pension you may be entitled to under the current rules. Self-employed people and some employees may have no pension unless they arrange one.

Step 2: estimate what you'll need

A common starting point is the share of your current spending you expect to continue in retirement — housing, health, family support and travel.

Step 3: close the gap

If the expected pension is below what you'll need, build your own savings and investments alongside it.

Why starting early matters

Saving SAR 1,000 a month from age 30 builds far more by 60 than saving SAR 2,000 a month from age 45 — because returns have longer to grow.

Practical habits

  • Increase your savings rate with every raise.
  • Avoid withdrawing retirement savings for short-term needs.
  • Review the plan every few years.
