Starting a side business: the money and registration basics

Many businesses start on the side of a job. Getting the basics right early saves trouble when it grows.

Choose the right status

Depending on the activity, you may work through a freelance document, a home-business licence where available, or a commercial registration as a sole proprietorship. Choose the route that matches your activity and lets you invoice properly.

Separate the money

Open a separate bank account for the business from the first sale, and keep every receipt and invoice.

Price properly

Include your time, materials, delivery and platform fees — not just the cost of materials.

Know your obligations

  • VAT: registration becomes mandatory once taxable sales exceed SAR 375,000 over 12 months (optional above SAR 187,500).
  • Zakat: a business with a commercial registration has zakat obligations with ZATCA.
  • Employment rules: check your employment contract for any restrictions on outside work.

Grow deliberately

Track monthly sales and profit. When the side business regularly covers your living costs, you'll have the numbers to decide your next step.
