Zakat and its rulings: How to calculate the zakat quorum for the year 2025

Zakat An essential pillar of the five pillars of Islam, it is obligatory for every sane, adult Muslim who is able to pay it. In this article, we will review in detail the zakat threshold for all types and how to calculate it for the year 2025.

What is the zakat threshold?

The zakat threshold is the amount that, if the money reaches it, zakat becomes obligatory, provided that a full year has passed, based on the hadith of the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace: “There is no zakat on money until a year has passed.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood and Al-Bayhaqi)

The zakat threshold varies according to the type of money, whether it is cash, gold and silver jewelry, livestock, or agricultural crops.

How to calculate the zakat quorum

The zakat quorum is equivalent to a quarter of a tenth of the money (2.5%), provided that a full Hijri year has passed. The quorum is determined based on the value of 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of silver.

Zakat on money

  • The minimum amount of money that must be paid for zakat on money is the minimum amount of money that has been in the possession for a full year without any decrease.
  • The value of the money must be equivalent to 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of silver.

Zakat on gold

  • The nisab for gold is 85 grams of pure gold (24 karat).
  • To calculate the nisab in local currency, the weight of the gold is multiplied by the price of a gram of pure gold.
  • If the gold is of lower carats such as 21 or 18, only the pure gold is calculated using the equation:
(Number of grams × carat) ÷ 24 = net weight
  • If the yield is 85 grams or more, zakat is due at a rate of 2.5%.

Silver zakat quorum

  • The nisab of silver is 595 grams of pure silver.
  • The nisab is calculated in local currency by multiplying 595 grams by the current price per gram.

Zakat on livestock (camels, sheep, cows)

  1. Zakat on camels:
  • 5 to 9 camels → 1 sheep.
  • From 10 to 14 → Chatan.
  • 15 to 19 → Three sheep.
  • 20 to 24 → Four sheep.
  • When 25 camels reach → Bint Makhad (a female who has completed one full year).
  1. Zakat on sheep:
  • The minimum number of sheep is 40, and one sheep is required.
  • Zakat increases gradually as the number increases.
  1. Zakat on cows:
  • When you have 30 cows → sell (male or female who have completed one year).
  • When owning 40 cows → old (female completed 2 years).

Zakat on grains and fruits

  • Zakat is obligatory on grains and fruits that are measured and stored.
  • The nisab is five wasqs, which is equivalent to 300 prophetic sa’s.
  • A Saa is approximately equivalent to 2.04 kilograms, and thus the nisab for grains and fruits becomes approximately 612 kilograms.

Amount of Zakat:

  • 10% if irrigation is natural (with rainwater).
  • 5% if irrigation is by machines and costs.

How to pay zakat

  1. Determine the type and amount of money.
  2. Ensure that the money reaches the minimum amount and that a full Hijri year has passed.
  3. Calculate 2.5% of the money in the case of cash, gold and silver.
